Hornswaggler | The culture, the humor, a bit of the sports, not so much the politics, and the workplace distraction
Hornswaggle is an alternate spelling of
hornswoggle, an archaic word that means to bamboozle or hoodwink. I take my
pronunciation from the late Harvey Korman in "Blazing Saddles" --
"I want rustlers, cutthroats, murderers,
bounty hunters, desperados, mugs, pugs, thugs, nitwits, halfwits, dimwits,
vipers, snipers, conmen, Indian agents, Mexican bandits, muggers,
buggerers, bushwhackers, hornswagglers, horse thieves, bull dykes, train
robbers, bank robbers, ass kickers, shit kickers and Methodists!"
If you're a fan of "Twin Peaks," then actor Ray Wise has a special place in your heart, because he scared the stool out of you with his performance as Leland Palmer.
Turns out he's a swell guy, though, judging from this recent interview with the A.V. Club.
My favorite part is where he describes how David Lynch let him know his character would turn out to be Laura Palmer's killer:
"As we got closer to the reveal -- the actors knew nothing -- I could see it was coming more my way. Then I finally got the call before we had to do the reveal show to meet with David and (co-creator) Mark (Frost), and Sheryl Lee (who played Laura Palmer) was in on the meeting, and so was Beymer. We sat cross-legged on the floor in this dark room that had a lava lamp in the corner, and David leaned over and touched me on the knee and said ... (Imitates Lynch) 'Ray, it was you, it was always you.'"
The funny thing is how unsurprising it is to learn this, given what I know about Lynch, most of which, besides his movies themselves, comes from David Foster Wallace's piece on Lynch and "Lost Highway" in "A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again."
