Hornswaggler | The culture, the humor, a bit of the sports, not so much the politics, and the workplace distraction

Hornswaggle is an alternate spelling of hornswoggle, an archaic word that means to bamboozle or hoodwink. I take my pronunciation from the late Harvey Korman in "Blazing Saddles" --

"I want rustlers, cutthroats, murderers, bounty hunters, desperados, mugs, pugs, thugs, nitwits, halfwits, dimwits, vipers, snipers, conmen, Indian agents, Mexican bandits, muggers, buggerers, bushwhackers, hornswagglers, horse thieves, bull dykes, train robbers, bank robbers, ass kickers, shit kickers and Methodists!"

Negligence

News reports about the horrific death of luger Nodar Kumaritashvili seem to be focusing on how the track is really fast and sort of vague questions about what can be done to make it safer. What I'm not seeing is the obvious point: There should be a plexiglass barrier along that section of the track to prevent people from flying off it into the steel columns supporting the roof above.

The fact that there isn't such a barrier strikes me as perhaps criminally negligent. The lip of the track there is just a few feet high. What could possibly explain the lack of such a barrier?* It may be that this is common among tracks around the world. I don't know. I don't watch a lot of luge. But the organizers need to erect a plexiglass wall right away and take similar steps at all these tracks.

*Even if organizers are worried about TV or reflections off the glass, cameras could always be built into the wall itself.
